Closing the gap in care for children with scoliosis.
Thanks to our community, our Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament raised $17,000
Event Highlights
In July 2025, we returned to Grandview Golf & Country Club for our Third Annual Swing for Scoliosis Charity Golf Tournament — and thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we raised an inspiring $17,000 in support of scoliosis care at the IWK Children’s Hospital.
Building on the success of our previous events, this year once again brought together more than 100 golfers for a memorable day of friendly competition, on-course contests, raffle prizes, and meaningful connections — all united by a shared goal of supporting children living with scoliosis across the Maritimes.
This year’s impact is especially meaningful. Proceeds from the tournament have been used to launch the IWK Scoliosis Bracing Fund (pilot program) — an initiative designed to improve equitable access to scoliosis bracing for families who may not otherwise be able to afford this medically necessary treatment.
Scoliosis bracing is a critical tool in helping manage curve progression in growing children, yet access remains a significant challenge. In Nova Scotia, provincial healthcare does not currently cover scoliosis bracing in the same way it supports many other orthopaedic devices. While some employer-sponsored benefit plans offer partial coverage, this support is not widely available and is often insufficient.
The financial burden can be substantial — with a single custom brace costing upwards of $5,000. Importantly, braces cannot be reused, as each one is uniquely designed and fitted to the individual torso of the child or youth, and may need to be replaced as they grow.
Recognizing this gap in care, Dr. Kevin Morash, Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the IWK Health Centre, brought forward the need for funding support to help ensure patients can access bracing when it is most critical in their treatment journey.
We are proud that funds raised through Swing for Scoliosis are now directly helping address this need — ensuring more children receive timely, effective care regardless of financial barriers, and giving families greater peace of mind during an already challenging time.
To our dedicated volunteers, generous sponsors, enthusiastic participants, and supportive community — thank you. Your continued commitment is not only growing this event year after year, but also creating lasting impact for patients and families across our region.
